About the Adirondacks: Indian Lake

Located about 40 miles northwest of the bustling tourist destinations of Lake George and Bolton Landing, the Adirondack community of Indian Lake is where quintessential small-town charm meets outdoor adventure. Known as the “Whitewater Capital of New York”, Indian Lake offers whitewater rafting on the Hudson River, as well as lakes, ponds, streams and mountains for exploring, and a charming mix of unique shops and restaurants.

Indian Lake Outdoor Recreation

Nature lovers appreciate the many lakes and ponds, and more than 300 miles of hiking trails in the Indian Lake Region, including OK Slip Falls and Wakey Fire Tower. Plus, an abundance of wildlife, like bald eagles and moose.

Considered a four-season destination, Indian Lake offers year-round activities ranging from adrenaline-pumping whitewater rafting and snow sports to fall foliage hikes and leisurely lake paddles. Enjoy boating, paddling, and fishing in summer, scenic hikes and mountain biking in the fall, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in winter, and whitewater rafting from April through October.

Indian Lake Shopping & Dining

Whether you’re shopping for souvenirs or grabbing a bite to eat after a day of exploring, Indian Lake has something for everyone. Visit Pine’s Country Store for Adirondack gear and essentials, Abanakee Studios for unique gifts and antiques, and The Painted Chair Store for custom-painted Adirondack furniture.

For dining options, check out Indian Lake Restaurant & Tavern for comfort food and daily specials, McSweeney’s Irish Pub for an authentic Irish pub experience, and Puterko’s Family Pizzeria for pizza, wings, calzones and garlic knots.

Indian Lake Events

Each year in June, cyclists descend on Indian Lake for the annual Black Fly Challenge, a rugged, 40-mile gravel grinder bike race between Indian Lake and Inlet, NY, featuring tough terrain, like dirt, sand, rocks, and steep climbs through the Moose River Plains.

Indian Lake also hosts its annual fishing derby around the Fourth of July each year, for kids under 16 years of age, and there’s even a winter festival in Indian Lake. Snocade is held annually during President’s Week in February and features the famous cardboard sled races, free indoor and outdoor activities, dining specials, and more.
