What to Do in Lake George During a Snowless Winter

What to Do in Lake George During a Snowless Winter

The Lake George Region averages around 40 to 60 inches of snowfall each year, starting as early as November and continuing into March. However, weather in the Adirondack mountains is unpredictable, and snowless winters do occasionally happen. The good news is that all of the local ski areas still make snow for skiing and snowboarding, and even without a winter wonderland, there are still plenty of cold weather things to do in Lake George.

5 Winter Things to Do in a Snowless Lake George

No snow? No worries! The Lake George Region gears up for winter with a full menu of cold weather activities and attractions.

Igloo Dining & Ice Bars

Dine al fresca without the frostbite at several Lake George restaurants offering heated outdoor Igloo dining and a truly unique experience, including The Inn at Erlowest in Lake George and Park 26 in downtown Glens Falls. The Barrel in Bolton Landing even has a curling rink. For more winter adult fun, sip a hot toddy, craft beer or a seasonal cocktail at an outdoor ice bar at the Adirondack Pub & Brewery, the Fort William Henry Hotel & Conference Center or the Sagamore resort.

Lake George Winter Events & Attractions

Starting in December and continuing through February, the Fort William Henry Historical Fortress hosts Lake George Winter’s Dream, a walk-through attraction featuring a series of immersive multimedia installations that will rekindle your love of the winter season. Also in February, the Lake George Winter Carnival runs every weekend, and includes activities for kids, pony rides, beach bonfires, fireworks, polar plunges, and cook-off contests for chowder, chili and chicken wings, as well as other contests and games.

Winter Hiking

While snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are probably out, you can still enjoy the hikes and trails in the Lake George Region with some warm clothes and a pair of waterproof hiking boots. Experienced winter hikers can explore Prospect Mountain or Sleeping Beauty, while those seeking more of a leisurely winter walk can check out the mostly-flat Warren County Bikeway, or the Rush Pond Trail and Meadowbrook Trails in Queensbury.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Yes, even without snow, it’s possible to hit the slopes while visiting Lake George. Gore Mountain in nearby North Creek NY has revolutionized their snow-making system, and increased reservoir capacity in recent years to provide snow for more than 100 trails. Likewise, West Mountain ski area in Queensbury NY features 100% mounted snowmaking and 100% lighted trails, making it the only ski area in the region to offer night skiing and riding.

Indoor Activities

With fewer visitors than summer and fall, winter is a great time to enjoy all that Lake George has to offer without the waits, lines or crowds. Check out the local breweries and wineries, cozy up beside the fireplace for a bite to eat at one of the year-round restaurants, and shop for deals at the Lake George Outlets. Try your hand at axe throwing or experience an interactive escape room. There’s even a world-class art museum nearby. Located in Glens Falls, The Hyde Collection features more than 5,000 pieces of art, including the works of Rembrandt, Renoir, Degas and Picasso.
